Twenty-nine years ago, a friend of mine who was working as an assistante anglaise in a French school decided to play some David Bowie songs to the pupils, but needed to check first what all the words meant. She wrote to me and asked what the line ‘a merry cast orchard brow’ means, in Life on Mars. The answer, of course, is that the line should be ‘America’s tortured brow’. Mind you, I’m still not sure what it means.

Actually, according to the lyrics book, it’s “Amerika’s tortured brow” (with a k like Kafka), & I still don’t know what it means.
