U.S spellings

April 29, 2012

Mark Malloch-Brown’s book The Unfinished Global Revolution, reviewed by me in today’s Indie on Sunday, uses American spellings all the way through: defense, mustache, lead for led etc.  He also uses several American locutions, such as likely as an adverb, meaning probably, and the toe-curling smarts for intelligence. Malloch-Brown is British, and the book is published by Penguin, a British publisher. What’s going on?

  1. Maybe the word ‘global’ is a clue.
