“See you on Cheeseday, then!”
Has anyone else noticed that this is becoming the regular pronunciation of Tuesday? It’s all part of that vowel-shift I’ve been talking about, whereby the /e/ sound has become /a/ and the /u/ sound has become /ee/. Thus music lessons become meesic lassons.
I have a hypothesis, speculative and tenuous, about one possible reason for these vowel-changes. The shift seems to be driven mainly by posh well-brought-up young women in the South-East. These people smile a lot. Try saying Tuesday while smiling. It comes out as Cheeseday, doesn’t it?
