Inappropriate name for a shop

March 19, 2016

Near where I live in Walthamstow there is a convenience store and off-licence which rejoices in the name of “Bilge Food and Wine”. Has anyone ever encountered a worse name for a shop?

The poor shopkeeper is probable a Turk proudly having the name Bilge (pronounced like bill+ghe as in ghetto), which in his or her (because it’s a unisex name) means wise, a person of knowledge. This makes me wonder how the name of the famous Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan has been received in English-speaking countries.

  2. Ah. That makes me feel a bit sad. But thank you for the explanation.
